SCIENCE UNIT 4: VITAL FUNCTIONS IN ANIMALS & PLANTS
Activity for Sergio and his friends in 4th Grade Primary:
THE NUTRITION FUNCTION IN ANIMALS is how they feed, breathe, distribute and use substances and expel waste.
- Animals feed: They obtain nutrients by eating other living things (plants, animals or both) and drinking water. They DIGEST their food because they have a DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.
- Animals breathe. they take oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. They have a RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.
- Animals distribute nutrients and oxygen to their bodies. Animals transport substances using their CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.
- Animals expel waste using their EXCRETORY SYSTEM.
Just like humans!!!!!!!
THE NUTRITION FUNCTION IN PLANTS is how they make nutrients, respire, distribute and use substances and expel waste.
Plants make nutrients by absorbing water, mineral salts (through their roots) and carbon dioxide (through their leaves) and carrying out PHOTOSYNTHESIS (changing xylem sap and carbon dioxide into phloem sap)
Plants take oxygen from the air and expel carbon dioxide, just the opposite of humans!!!!!
ANIMAL REPRODUCTION
It is SEXUAL: a male produces spermatozoa and a female produces ova. Animals have a REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM with 3 stages:
- FERTILISATION (an spermatozoa and an ovum join together and make a zygote which becomes an embryo later).
- DEVELOPMENT OF THE EMBRYO ( In OVIPAROUS ANIMALS embryos develop inside an egg. This is the incubation period. In VIVIPAROUS ANIMALS the embryo develops inside its mother. This is thE gestation period).
- BIRTH (In OVIPAROUS ANIMALS they come out of the eggs. This is HATCHING. Some animals like frogs have a transformation called METAMORPHOSIS. In VIVIPAROUS ANIMALS they come out of their mothers. This is called BIRTH or DELIVERY).
Humans are viviparous animals!!!!!!
PLANTS REPRODUCTION
The majority of plants have a SEXUAL reproduction through flowers. A FLOWER has: stamens (the male part), pistil (the female part), the corolla (petals surrounding the stamens ans pistil) and the calyx (green leaves called sepals protecting the flower).
THE STAGES OF REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS
- POLLINATION: pollen moves from the stamen of one flower to the pistil of another.
- FERTILISATION: the pollen grain and the ovule join together.
- SEED AND FRUIT FORMATION: the ovule forms an embryo, that develops into a SEED. The pistil develops into a FRUIT.
- GERMINATION: In MOIST SOIL seeds germinate, the embryo develops into a new plant.
INTERACTION IN ANIMALS AND PLANTS
- Animals have sense organs (eyes, ears, taste and smell and touch organs), a nervous system (brain and nerves) and a locomotore system (bones and muscles)
- Plants have no sense organs, no nervous system and no locomotor system but they can REACT to changes in the environment.
Now YOU CAN INTERACT with animals and plants when you finish studying.

SCIENCE: UNIT 3: HUMAN REPRODUCTION
Activity for Sergio and his friends at 4th Grade Primary.

Here are links with some useful tips for parents to deal with this topic:
- The male reproductive system produces spermatozoa. It is formed by the testes, which are inside the scrotum, and the penis, a long organ over the scrotum.
- The female reproductive system produces ova and protects the baby while it develops. It is formed by the ovaries (produce ova), the uterus (where the baby lives), the Fallopian tubes (connect the ovaries with the uterus), the vagina and the vulva formed by the labia.
- Fertilsation is when a spermatozoon and an ovum join together to create a zygote.
- Pregnancy is when the embryo develops inside its mother's uterus. It lasts nine months and ends when the baby is born. The embryo becomes a foetus. The foetus receives food and oxygen from its mother through the placenta. This is connected to the foetus' tummy through the umbilical cord.
- Birth is the process when the foetus comes out of the mother's body. After the birth the doctor cuts the umbilical cord. This is why we have a tummy button.

SCIENCE, UNIT 2: HUMAN RESPIRATION, CIRCULATION & EXCRETION
Activity for Sergio and his friends in 4th Grade Primary.
1) The RESPIRATORY SYSTEM is the part of the human body related to BREATHING (Taking in oxygen and letting out carbon dioxide).
The RESPIRATORY TRACT is the group of tubes which air goes in and out: Nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi, which end in the alveoli. The lungs are like sponges and contain the bronchi and the alveoli.
BREATHING has 3 stages:
1. INHALATION: Taking air into the lungs.
2. THE EXCHANGE OF OXIGEN AND CARBON DIOXIDE with the blood.
3. EXHALATION: Letting air out of the body.

2) The CIRCULATORY SYSTEM is the part of the body that distributes nutrients and carries waste to the organs that eliminate it. It consists of:
- The HEART
- The BLOOD VESSELS
The BLOOD is the red liquid in our body.
The HEART pumps the BLOOD through the BLOOD VESSELS. The HEART has 4 chambers.
The BLOOD goes from the HEART to the BODY ORGANS and then comes back to the HEART. It's like a circuit.
3) EXCRETION is expelling waste.
The respiratory system releases carbon dioxide into the air.
The digestive system expells waste from the anus.
The EXCRETORY SYSTEM is made up of:
- 2 KIDNEYS (they filter the blood & make urine)
- 2 URETERS (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder)
- The BLADDER (it contanis urine. It is full when we want to go to the toilet9
- The URETHRA (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the toilet)
The SKIN eliminates waste through SWEAT GANDS, too.
Good job kids! Now you are sweating, you can rest.

DIET & NUTRITION
Activity for Sergio and his friends at 4th Grade Primary
We obtain NUTRIENTS by eating FOOD and drinking WATER. There are 3 TYPES OF FOOD according to the NUTRIENTS they contain:
- Energy-producing food (carbohydrates & fats) to get energy.
- Body-building food (proteins) to grow.
- Body-regulating food (vitamines, minerals and fibre) to prevent illness.
The human DIGESTIVE SYSTEM is made up of:
- THE DIGESTIVE TRACK: mouth, pharynx, oesophagus. stomach, small intestine, large intestine & anus.
- THE DIGESTIVE GLANDS: salivary glands, liver & pancreas.
The DIET is the food and water that a person consumes every day but a HEALTHY DIET is one that contains enough of the nutrients and water the body needs.
Important things TO BE HEALTHY:
- Have a HEALTHY DIET
- follow FOOD SAFETY rules.
- Do regular PHYSICAL EXERCISE
- SLEEP and REST.
So here is a link to DO PHYSICAL EXERCISE on line. You have all studied hard and you need to rest. I hope you enjoy it:

BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!
Hi, sorry for being out of order for some time. I have lots of work organizing the beginning of the academic year. Well, we are back to school. I will publish posts for my ex-students and new students. Many of you won't have English classes at CEPA Joaquín Sorolla but we will be able to open some groups at the end of September. There is even a possibility to have classes for higher levels in a different way so, be in touch, please.
We are all living hard times. Probably the only good news around is that ALBERTO CONTADOR won La Vuelta a España and recuperated his deserved throne but we must be positive and keep on trying new experiences. Welcome to course 2012-2013. You know where I am whenever you need anything and I hope to be the teacher of some of you this course again, hopefully. Anyway I will continue publishing posts for my ex-students as well. THANK YOU ALL FOR FOLLOWING ME SO OFTEN. You give me energy and good will to work. : ) Thanks, thanks, thanks......
Let's start now with a funny lesson of phonetics. My children are teaching me a lot of amusing things in English. This is the song I LIke to Eat Apples & Bananas. Here you can practise the horrible diphthongs in English. I hope you enjoy it. If you try to sing it and your tongue doesn't twist, that means that you English is fluent. Good luck:

POSTMAN PAT
Activity for children and all the students
Listen to the song of Postman Pat and see the lovely lanscapes of the English countryside. After that listen again and read the lyrics. Notice the use of Present Simple and Present Countinuous:
Early in the morning, Just as day is dawning,
He picks up all the post bags in his van.
Postman Pat, Postman Pat,
Postman Pat and his black and white cat,
All the birds are singing, and the day is just beginning.
Pat feels he's a really happy man.
Everybody knows his bright red van,
All his friends will smile as he waves to greet them,
Maybe... You can never be sure,
There'll be knock...[knock knock] Ring [ring ring]
Letters through your door.
Postman Pat, Postman Pat,
Postman Pat and his black and white cat,
All the birds are singing, and the day is just beginning.
Pat feels he's a really happy man.
Pat feels he's a really happy man.
Pat feels he's a really happy man.
You can see episodes of Postman Pat on the Internet. They are 15 minutes long. The language is easy and there are realistic situations of life in the British countryside. You will love it.
